Beyond the ABCs: Why Movement Is the First Language of the Brain

I used to think learning started at the table. You know the scene: sharpened pencils, open books, fresh plans, and at least one child already sliding out of the chair like gravity had personally offended him. I had this quiet idea that if we could just get everyone seated, focused, and reasonably upright, then the real learning could begin.

Then I had children.

Nothing will humble a lovely educational theory faster than a child who needs to hang upside down from the couch before he can remember the sound of the letter B. At first, I thought the movement was the interruption. The wiggling, climbing, crashing, spinning, tapping, and wandering all looked like obstacles to learning. I wanted to get past the movement so we could get to the lesson.

But over time, especially while homeschooling children with developmental delays, I began to see something different. Movement was not always a distraction from learning. Many times, movement was the doorway into learning.

That is because movement and brain development in children are deeply connected. Before a child writes a sentence, solves a math problem, reads a page, or sits through a lesson, the brain and body have already been working together for years. Rolling, crawling, reaching, balancing, climbing, jumping, grasping, and crossing the midline all help build the pathways the brain uses for higher-level learning.

The ABCs matter. Books matter. Numbers matter. But before the brain is ready to manage symbols on a page, it must first learn through the body. A child’s earliest language is not spoken with words. It is spoken through motion.

In this article, we are going to look at why movement matters so much for learning, how gross motor skills and fine motor skills support cognitive development, and why children with developmental delays often need more movement, not less. We will also talk about what this can look like inside a real homeschool day, where the laundry is not folded, someone needs a snack, and the baby may or may not be wearing pants.

Why Movement and Brain Development in Children Belong Together

When we talk about learning, we usually think about the obvious school things first. Reading. Writing. Math. Memory work. Sitting still long enough to finish one page without turning the pencil into a drumstick. These are the skills that show up in lesson plans, grade levels, and curriculum catalogs that promise peaceful mornings with children who appear to own matching socks.

But long before a child is ready for those skills, the brain is learning through the body. A baby turns his head, reaches for a toy, pushes up on his arms, rolls, crawls, pulls to stand, and takes those first wobbly steps. None of that is random. Each movement gives the brain information. Where is my body? How do my two sides work together? What happens when I shift my weight? How do I reach without falling over? How do my eyes, hands, and muscles cooperate?

That early movement lays groundwork for later learning. When a child crawls, for example, both sides of the body must work together in a coordinated pattern. The right arm moves with the left leg, then the left arm moves with the right leg. That cross-body pattern matters because the two sides of the brain are learning to communicate and cooperate. Later, that same kind of coordination supports skills like reading across a page, writing with one hand while stabilizing the paper with the other, and organizing thoughts in a sequence.

This is why gross motor skills are not just “big movement skills.” They are part of the learning foundation. Running, jumping, climbing, balancing, throwing, catching, rolling, and crawling all teach the brain and body how to work together. They build strength, rhythm, timing, balance, and spatial awareness. A child who struggles with these areas may look clumsy, restless, cautious, impulsive, or constantly in motion. But underneath the behavior, the body may be asking for more practice building the pathways that support focus and control.

I have seen this many times at home. A child who could not sit still for reading might do better after heavy work, like carrying a laundry basket, pushing against a wall, or crawling through a hallway obstacle course. A child who looked checked out during math might come back to life after bouncing, marching, or doing cross-body movements. It was not magic. It was the nervous system waking up and getting organized.

For a long time, I thought I needed to choose between movement and academics. Either we were doing school, or we were taking a break. But children with developmental delays taught me that movement often is part of school. It may not look like school to the neighbor peeking through the window, especially if your child is bear-walking past a stack of phonics cards. But if that movement helps the brain become ready to learn, then it belongs in the day.

Fine motor skills matter too, and they are often where parents first notice a problem. A child avoids coloring, hates handwriting, grips the pencil too tightly, presses so hard the page nearly files a complaint, or tires after writing just a few words. It is easy to assume the answer is more handwriting practice. Sometimes practice helps, but if the hand is weak, the shoulder is unstable, the core is tired, or the eyes and hands are not working together smoothly, more writing may only lead to more frustration.

The hand is not working alone. Fine motor skills rest on gross motor foundations. Before a child can use the small muscles of the fingers well, the larger muscles of the body need to provide stability. The core, shoulders, arms, and wrists all play a role. If those areas are weak or poorly coordinated, the fingers may have to work too hard. That is when handwriting becomes exhausting, messy, slow, or emotionally loaded.

And yes, handwriting can become emotionally loaded. Ask any parent who has watched a seven-word copywork sentence turn into a full-family character-building exercise.

This is one reason developmental delays can show up in surprising ways. A child may understand a concept but be unable to show it on paper. He may tell a detailed story out loud but freeze when asked to write three sentences. She may know the answer to the math problem but fall apart because copying the problem, lining up the numbers, and forming the digits require more body control than she has available that day.

When that happens, the child does not need shame. The child needs support.

Understanding movement and brain development in children gives parents a kinder and more useful lens. Instead of asking, “Why won’t you just write neatly?” we can ask, “What body skills does this task require?” Instead of saying, “Stop moving and pay attention,” we can ask, “What kind of movement might help this child become ready to pay attention?”

That does not mean children should be allowed to run wild through every lesson like tiny caffeinated squirrels. Structure still matters. Boundaries matter. Children need to learn how to work when the work is hard. But we can hold those expectations while also respecting the way development works.

Movement builds the brain’s readiness for learning. It helps organize the nervous system, strengthens body awareness, supports coordination, and gives children the physical foundation needed for academic work. For many children, especially those with developmental delays, movement is not the thing standing in the way of learning. It is the first language the brain uses to get there

How Gross Motor Skills Build the Foundation for Fine Motor Skills

One of the most common questions I hear from parents is, “How do I get my child to write more?” Usually, they ask this with a tired look in their eyes, because handwriting has become one of those daily battles nobody planned for. They bought the cute handwriting book. They sharpened the pencils. They gave clear directions. Then their child wrote three letters, collapsed across the table, and acted as if asked to carve the alphabet into stone with a toothpick.

I understand that kind of frustration. Handwriting seems like a small task until you start counting everything the body must do at the same time. A child has to sit upright, keep the feet grounded, hold the paper steady, stabilize the shoulder, control the wrist, move the fingers, track the line, remember the letter shape, manage spacing, and keep enough emotional control not to declare war on the entire English language.

That is not one skill. That is a whole orchestra.

Fine motor skills, which include small movements of the hands and fingers, are built on top of gross motor skills. Before the fingers can do careful work, the larger muscles need to provide stability. Think of it this way: if the shoulder, core, and posture are wobbly, the hand has to work from an unstable base. That makes pencil control harder, cutting harder, buttoning harder, tying shoes harder, and written work far more tiring than it looks.

This is why a child who struggles with handwriting may not need more handwriting first. He may need more climbing, crawling, pushing, pulling, carrying, balancing, and reaching. Those big movements strengthen the body systems that make small movements easier later. They also give the brain important feedback about where the body is in space, which helps with control and coordination.

I know that can feel backward. If the problem is handwriting, shouldn’t we practice handwriting? Sometimes, yes. But when a child is melting down, avoiding the pencil, gripping too hard, writing painfully slowly, or producing work that does not match what he knows, the wise move is often to step back and look at the foundation.

A child who cheerfully tells you a beautiful story but cannot write one sentence is not necessarily being stubborn. A child who can explain a math concept out loud but cannot line up the numbers on paper may not be careless. A child who spells well orally but falls apart during copywork may be showing you that the physical demand of writing is taking up too much brain space.

This is where homeschooling gives us a gift, though it may not always feel like one at 9:17 in the morning. We can separate the skills. We can let a child narrate while we write. We can use oral answers for history or science while we keep gently building writing stamina. We can shorten copywork without lowering the standard for attention and care. We can practice letter formation for a few focused minutes, then go outside and do the gross motor work that supports the hand.

A common fear is that accommodations will make a child lazy. Parents worry that if they write for the child, reduce the number of problems, or allow oral narration, the child will never learn to do the harder thing. That fear makes sense. We want our children to grow, not hide forever behind support.

But a support is not the same thing as an escape hatch.

A good support keeps the child moving toward the goal without burying him under a task he cannot yet manage. If handwriting is weak, we still work on handwriting. We simply refuse to make handwriting the gatekeeper for every other subject. A child can learn history, theology, science, literature, and oral composition while the body is still developing the ability to write with ease. That is not lowering expectations. That is teaching the child in front of us.

This also matters for entrepreneurial parents who are building businesses while homeschooling. You may not have hours to spend turning every assignment into a therapeutic event. You need simple, repeatable rhythms that work in real life. Five minutes of wall pushes before copywork. A quick animal-walk race down the hall before math. Carrying groceries, pulling a laundry basket, kneading dough, sweeping, digging, climbing, or helping move books from one shelf to another. These ordinary activities can become part of the developmental foundation when we use them with purpose.

The beauty of movement is that it does not have to look fancy. Children do not need a perfect sensory room before they can grow. They need chances to use their bodies in strong, coordinated, meaningful ways. They need to crawl, climb, balance, squeeze, reach, lift, and move across the midline. They need time away from flat screens and flat chairs so the brain can receive rich information from the body.

That does not mean every learning problem disappears after a few bear crawls down the hallway. I wish. If that were true, I would have sold tickets and retired early. Development is usually slower and less glamorous than we want. But when we build gross motor skills consistently, fine motor skills often have a better chance to grow.

Over time, parents may notice small changes. The pencil grip relaxes a little. The child writes longer before tiring. Cutting becomes less awkward. The page looks less chaotic. The child complains less, or at least complains with slightly less theatrical flair. These are signs that the body is becoming more organized.

And when the body is more organized, the brain has more energy available for thinking.

That is the goal. We are not trying to create children who perform perfectly at the table. We are helping them build the strength, stability, coordination, and confidence they need to show what they know. Movement gives the brain a place to begin. Fine motor skills grow best when the whole body is invited into the process

Why Physical Activity and Learning Work Better Together

Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed the idea that serious learning should look quiet. A child sitting still with a pencil in hand looks like education. A child crawling under the table, bouncing on a cushion, or pacing while answering questions looks like someone needs to regain control of the room. Sometimes that is true. Sometimes the room does need a little control, especially if the pacing child is also holding a granola bar and leaving crumbs like a wilderness trail.

But quiet is not the same thing as learning.

For many children, especially children with developmental delays, movement helps the brain become available for learning. Physical activity increases body awareness, supports attention, and helps the nervous system move toward a more regulated state. A child who is under-alert may need movement to wake up the brain. A child who is over-alert may need steady, rhythmic movement to calm the body. Either way, movement can prepare the child for the kind of thinking we ask for during school.

This does not mean every lesson has to become a circus, though some days it may feel as if the circus has already arrived and forgotten to charge admission. It means we can stop treating movement as the enemy. We can begin using it as a tool.

Before reading, a child might do wall pushes, cross-crawls, or a short balance activity. Before math, he might march while skip counting or toss a beanbag while answering facts. Before handwriting, she might carry a basket of books, squeeze therapy putty, or crawl through a hallway tunnel made of chairs and blankets. These simple activities can help the brain and body organize before the academic task begins.

The best movement is purposeful, not random. Random movement may burn energy, but purposeful movement builds pathways. Crawling, balancing, spinning in moderation, climbing, throwing, catching, crossing the midline, pushing, pulling, and carrying all give the brain useful information. They help the child understand where the body is, how much force to use, and how to coordinate both sides together.

In a homeschool day, this can be woven in without making everything complicated. You might read aloud while your child builds with blocks on the floor. You might let a child stand at the counter for spelling instead of sitting at the table. You might ask oral narration while the child walks beside you outside. You might place math facts on index cards across the room and have the child move to the answer. You might take a five-minute movement break between subjects because everyone, including the parent, is starting to lose the will to continue.

These small choices can change the tone of the day. Not always instantly. Not always neatly. But over time, they teach a child that learning is not trapped in a chair.

For entrepreneurial parents, this matters in a very practical way. When you are homeschooling and building a business, you need rhythms that protect both learning and sanity. Movement can become part of that rhythm. A child who gets strong physical input before independent work may be more able to focus while you answer an email or take a short call. A child who has movement built into the schedule may be less likely to seek it by climbing furniture during your most important meeting, because naturally that is when furniture becomes irresistible.

Of course, movement is not a cure-all. If a child has significant developmental delays, sensory issues, motor planning challenges, or vision concerns, you may need professional guidance. An occupational therapist, physical therapist, developmental optometrist, or other qualified provider can help you understand what kind of support your child needs. Movement is powerful, but it should be wise.

The goal is not to exhaust children so they will finally sit still. That is a common mistake, and an understandable one. We think if we run them hard enough, they will become calm. Sometimes that works for about seven blessed minutes. But the deeper goal is regulation, not exhaustion. A regulated child is not necessarily motionless. A regulated child is more available, more connected, and more able to respond.

There is a difference.

A child who has been pushed into fatigue may look quiet but have little energy left for learning. A child who has received the right kind of movement may become more organized and ready. That is why we watch the child, not just the clock. Does bouncing help or make things wilder? Does heavy work calm the body? Does spinning lead to better focus or complete chaos with socks? Does walking while narrating help ideas flow?

Your child’s body will give you clues.

Over time, you may begin to see patterns. Maybe reading goes better after crawling. Maybe handwriting improves after shoulder work. Maybe math facts stick better when paired with rhythm. Maybe your child listens beautifully during read-aloud time while building, drawing, or lying upside down on the couch in a position no chiropractor would approve.

This is not failure. This is information.

When we connect physical activity and learning, we honor the way children are made. The brain does not float above the body like a tiny academic balloon. It learns through the body, with the body, and because of the body. Movement gives children sensory feedback, builds coordination, supports attention, and helps them grow the foundation for cognitive development.

So yes, teach the ABCs. Practice the math facts. Read the good books. Write the sentences. But do not forget the crawling, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling, and rolling. Those things may look ordinary, but they are doing quiet, important work beneath the surface.

Sometimes the first step toward better learning is not a new curriculum. Sometimes it is letting the child move.

Simple Ways to Add Movement Without Overhauling Your Homeschool

Start before the struggle

The best time to add movement is usually before the lesson falls apart. Once a child is crying over handwriting or melting into the chair during reading, movement can still help, but now you are using it as rescue. It is often better to use movement as preparation.

Before reading, try two or three minutes of crawling, cross-body marches, or wall pushes. Before handwriting, add shoulder and hand work, like carrying a basket, pushing palms together, squeezing putty, or doing a few animal walks. Before math, try rhythmic movement, such as stepping, clapping, bouncing, or tossing a beanbag while counting.

These little starts may feel too small to matter. But small things, done consistently, often become the quiet hinges that turn the whole day.

Match the movement to the need

Not all movement does the same thing. Some children need movement that wakes them up. Others need movement that calms them down. Some need both, depending on the hour, the subject, the weather, and whether breakfast involved protein or a suspicious amount of syrup.

Heavy work, like pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, or crawling, often helps children feel more grounded. Rhythmic movement, like rocking, marching, walking, or swinging gently, may help organize attention. Cross-body movements, where one side of the body works with the other, can support coordination and midline crossing.

The goal is not to make movement complicated. The goal is to notice what helps your child become more available for learning.

Use ordinary household work

You do not need a house full of special equipment. Your home already has developmental tools hiding in plain sight. Laundry baskets, grocery bags, couch cushions, stairs, blankets, pillows, chairs, books, and even a broom can become useful when a child needs purposeful movement.

A child can carry towels to the bathroom, push a laundry basket down the hall, wipe the table with firm pressure, sweep the kitchen, pull weeds, knead dough, stack books, or help unload groceries. These jobs build strength, coordination, sequencing, and body awareness while also helping the house look slightly less like a small raccoon convention passed through.

That is what I call a double blessing.

Let learning leave the chair

Some children think better when they are not sitting still. This can be hard for adults who were trained to see sitting as proof of attention. But a child may listen better while standing, building, drawing, pacing, bouncing lightly, or lying on the floor.

Try spelling words at the counter. Practice math facts on the stairs. Read aloud while your child draws or builds. Let oral narration happen during a walk. Tape review cards to the wall and let your child move to the answer. Use the floor, the hallway, the porch, or the backyard.

A chair is a tool. It is not a sacred educational object.

Keep it short and repeatable

A movement routine does not need to take over your day. In fact, it probably should not. Long, elaborate plans are impressive on paper and suspiciously fragile in real life. The routine that works is the one you can repeat when the baby is fussy, the email inbox is loud, and you just realized someone used the good scissors to cut cardboard again.

Choose two or three movement activities and attach them to the lessons that usually cause the most trouble. Do them for a few minutes. Watch what happens. Adjust as needed.

This is not about perfection. It is about learning your child.

Know when to ask for help

Movement can support learning in powerful ways, but some children need more than home strategies. If your child has severe motor delays, poor balance, frequent falls, intense sensory reactions, vision concerns, feeding issues, or daily tasks that remain unusually difficult, it may be time to seek professional support.

An occupational therapist, physical therapist, developmental optometrist, or other trained provider can help you understand what is happening beneath the surface. Getting help does not mean you failed as a homeschool parent. It means you are building a wiser team.

Movement and brain development in children are connected, but every child’s path looks different. Your job is not to become an expert in everything overnight. Your job is to notice, learn, support, and take the next right step.

Helping the Brain Begin Where the Body Is

When I look back on our homeschool years, I can see how often I tried to begin with the end skill. I wanted the paragraph written, the math page finished, the reading lesson completed, and the handwriting neat enough to prove we were all fine. But many times, my child’s body was telling me we needed to begin somewhere earlier.

That is not failure. That is development.

Movement and brain development in children are connected in ways that should make us more hopeful, not more overwhelmed. Your child may need crawling before copywork, balancing before better focus, shoulder strength before handwriting, or rhythmic movement before reading. Those needs do not mean your child is behind forever. They simply show you where to start.

So teach the ABCs. Read the books. Practice the math facts. Write the sentences. But do not forget that the brain learned first through motion, and many struggling learners need to return to that language for a while before the next academic step becomes possible.

You can do this. Start small. Watch closely. Add one purposeful movement before the hardest lesson of the day and notice what changes. Then keep building from there, however imperfectly.
