I used to think my children knew where their bodies were simply because their bodies were, well, attached to them. This seemed reasonable at the time. Then I watched one child fall out of a chair while sitting still, another crash into a doorway that had not moved, and someone else become personally offended by the seam in a sock before breakfast.

That was when I began to realize that the tactile proprioceptive vestibular systems were not just fancy therapy words. They were part of our daily life. They were in the sock battles, the chair tipping, the constant spinning, the “Why are you touching everything?” moments, and the mysterious bruises nobody could explain because nobody remembered bumping into anything.

Most parents are familiar with the five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. But many of our children are also working hard with senses we do not talk about nearly as much. These hidden senses help the brain answer questions like, “Where is my body?” “How hard am I pushing?” “Am I upright?” “Am I safe?” and “Why does this shirt feel like it was designed by someone who hates children?”

When those systems are working smoothly, a child can sit in a chair, walk through a doorway, tolerate normal clothing, climb playground equipment, and know how much force to use when hugging the dog. When those systems are not working smoothly, daily life can feel confusing, exhausting, and sometimes a little like living with a very affectionate bumper car.

The good news is that behavior starts to make more sense when we understand what the brain and body are trying to do. A child who crashes, spins, melts down over tags, leans on everyone, or avoids playground equipment may not be trying to be difficult. Their nervous system may be asking for help.

The tactile, proprioceptive, and vestibular systems are three sensory systems that help your child understand and move through the world. They work behind the scenes all day long, helping the brain gather information from the body and the environment.

The tactile system is the sense of touch. It helps your child notice texture, temperature, pressure, pain, and light touch. This is the system that helps a child feel the difference between a soft blanket, a scratchy tag, a warm mug, a sharp pencil point, or a sibling brushing past them in the hallway with what they believe was great violence.

For some children, the tactile system is too sensitive. These children may hate certain clothes, avoid messy play, dislike hair washing, or melt down over socks, seams, tags, lotion, toothpaste, or food textures. A shirt may feel fine to you, but to your child it may feel like sandpaper with sleeves. They are not making it up. Their brain is receiving the touch information more loudly than yours might.

Other children seem to need more touch input. They may touch everything in a store, rub their hands on walls, chew on sleeves, play roughly, or constantly seek hugs, pressure, and contact. These children may not be trying to annoy every adult within a fifteen-foot radius. Their brains may be looking for stronger sensory information so they can feel organized.

The proprioceptive system is the sense of body position and pressure. It helps your child know where their body is without looking. If you close your eyes and touch your nose, your proprioceptive system is helping you do that. It gives the brain information from muscles, joints, and tendons. It tells the brain how much force to use, where the arms and legs are, and whether the body is pushing, pulling, lifting, stretching, or squeezing.

When proprioceptive input is not registering well, children may seem clumsy, rough, or unaware of personal space. They may crash into furniture, lean on people, stomp instead of walk, press too hard when writing, break pencils, slam doors, or hug with the intensity of a tiny professional wrestler. They may also tire quickly when sitting upright or doing schoolwork because their body has to work harder to stay organized.

In our house, proprioceptive struggles often looked like “Why did you just body-check the couch?” followed by a child staring at me as if I had asked why the moon was in the sky. The answer was usually not misbehavior. The answer was, “My body needed impact, and the couch was available.”

The vestibular system is the sense of balance and movement. It is connected to the inner ear and helps the brain understand motion, gravity, speed, and direction. This system helps your child sit upright, move smoothly, climb safely, ride a bike, walk across uneven ground, and know whether they are still or moving.

Some children crave vestibular input. They spin, swing, jump, hang upside down, run in circles, or climb everything that looks even mildly climbable. Other children avoid vestibular input. They may be fearful on playground equipment, nervous on stairs, carsick, afraid to have their feet leave the ground, or upset when their head tips backward during hair washing.

And then there are the children who somehow do both. They may spin wildly one day and refuse a swing the next. This can feel confusing until we remember that sensory systems are not light switches. They are more like dimmer switches connected to a toddler, a fog machine, and an electrical panel nobody labeled.

These systems also work together. A child who struggles with body awareness may also struggle with balance. A child who is overwhelmed by touch may become more emotional when tired, hungry, or overstimulated. A child who craves movement may have a harder time sitting still for math, not because math is evil, although some days that case can be made, but because their nervous system is not ready for stillness.

Once parents understand these systems, the behavior in front of them starts to tell a different story. Instead of asking, “Why is my child doing this to me?” we can begin asking, “What is my child’s body trying to tell me?”

That shift matters. It does not excuse every behavior or remove the need for boundaries. Children still need guidance, correction, routines, and practice. But when we understand the body’s role, we can respond with more accuracy. We stop treating every sensory struggle like defiance, and we begin supporting the child’s nervous system while still teaching what is appropriate.

How Sensory Processing Affects Daily Life and Homeschooling

Sensory processing is not something that stays politely in one corner of childhood. It shows up everywhere. It walks into the kitchen before breakfast, tags along to church, climbs into the van, sits at the homeschool table, and occasionally throws itself dramatically onto the floor because the banana broke in half.

When a child’s tactile, proprioceptive, or vestibular systems are struggling, ordinary routines can become harder than they look. Getting dressed may take forty-five minutes because every pair of pants feels wrong. Handwriting may fall apart because the child cannot feel how hard to press the pencil. Reading time may become a wrestling match because the child’s body is sliding off the chair, curling upside down, or slowly melting under the table like a tired candle.

This is where many parents start to feel discouraged. We think, “I must be doing something wrong. Other families are doing spelling, and we are negotiating with socks.” But sensory challenges can make normal tasks feel unusually difficult. Your child may not be refusing the routine as much as struggling to enter it.

In a homeschool setting, this can be both exhausting and helpful. It is exhausting because you are with your child for so much of the day, which means you see all of it. The wiggles, the crashes, the tears, the avoidance, the sudden need to hang upside down during phonics. There is no school hallway where the sensory struggle disappears from your view. It is right there beside you, often touching your elbow with sticky hands.

The key word is planned. We are not simply letting chaos run the schedule while we wave a tiny white flag over the math book. We are giving the nervous system what it needs in a way that supports learning.

A child with tactile sensitivity may need clothing choices, warning before touch, simple hygiene routines, or gradual exposure to textures. This does not mean the child never has to tolerate anything uncomfortable. It means we help them build tolerance carefully instead of treating every reaction like stubbornness. A child who melts down over toothpaste may need a different flavor, a different brush, or a slower routine. This is not spoiling. This is problem-solving.

One common fear parents have is that sensory supports will become a crutch. They worry that if they allow movement, headphones, fidgets, or clothing accommodations, the child will never learn to function without them. I understand that fear. Parents want to raise capable children, not children who need a thirty-seven-step launch sequence before they can write one sentence.

But support is not the enemy of growth. Thoughtful support gives the child a path toward growth. A child who cannot focus because their body is disorganized is not building character by suffering through a worksheet. They are usually building frustration, avoidance, and possibly a deep suspicion of anything printed on paper. When we support the nervous system first, we often get better access to the child’s attention, reasoning, and cooperation.

This does not mean every day will be smooth. Some days you will try all the right things and still end up with tears over a sock, a pencil, or the wrong spoon. That does not mean you failed. It means your child is a whole person with a real nervous system, and you are a real parent with limited coffee and a finite amount of patience.

The goal is not to create a perfect sensory routine. The goal is to become a better detective. Watch what happens before the hard moments. Notice what helps your child recover. Pay attention to time of day, sleep, hunger, noise, clothing, transitions, and movement. Patterns are clues, and clues help you respond with wisdom instead of panic.

Over time, you may begin to see that your child’s behavior makes more sense than you thought. The crashing, spinning, chewing, avoiding, leaning, and melting down are not random. They are signals from a body that is trying to find its place in space.

Building Body Awareness With Practical Sensory Support

For many children, body awareness does not develop evenly. Some children seem to know exactly where they are in space from the time they are toddlers. Others move through the world as if furniture, walls, siblings, and doorframes are all making unpredictable choices.

Body awareness is built through experience. Children learn where their bodies are by moving, touching, pushing, pulling, climbing, falling, recovering, and trying again. This is one reason childhood movement matters so much. The body teaches the brain through action.

At the homeschool table, poor body awareness may look like constant shifting, falling from chairs, leaning on the table, pressing too hard, writing too lightly, bumping siblings, or needing to sit in odd positions. A child may look careless when they spill water, knock books over, or step on someone’s foot for the third time in ten minutes. But if their proprioceptive and vestibular systems are not giving clear information, they may honestly not realize where their body is or how much force they are using.

Before we assume disrespect, it helps to ask what kind of input the child may need. Does this child calm down after heavy work? Do they focus better after jumping? Do they avoid climbing, swinging, or balancing? Do they seek deep pressure? Do they become more regulated after being wrapped in a blanket, carrying something heavy, or lying under a weighted lap pad?

In our home, I learned that some children needed more input before I asked for output. That became a helpful little rule. Before handwriting, we might do wall push-ups or carry books. Before reading aloud, we might take a movement break. Before expecting anyone to sit through a lesson, we might make sure their body had a chance to wake up and organize.

This is not complicated, but it does require attention. A child who is wildly dysregulated rarely becomes calm because we say, “Calm down,” with our serious parent eyebrows. If that worked, parenting would be much shorter and we would all have fewer forehead wrinkles. The body often needs a body-based answer.

Heavy work is one of the simplest places to begin. Heavy work means activities that use the muscles against resistance. Pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, crawling, squeezing, and climbing can all provide proprioceptive input. These activities can be built naturally into family life. Carry the laundry. Push the vacuum. Pull a wagon. Stack books. Wipe the table with firm pressure. Knead dough. Dig in the garden. Move chairs before lunch.

Vestibular input can also be helpful, but it needs more careful watching because children respond differently to movement. Swinging may calm one child and make another child more wound up than a squirrel in a ceiling fan. Spinning can be especially intense, so it helps to notice how your child responds afterward. Are they calmer, more focused, and happier? Or are they more emotional, impulsive, and unable to stop crashing into life?

Tactile support can be woven into the day as well. Some children benefit from sensory bins, playdough, water play, cooking, brushing animals, or exploring textures in low-pressure ways. Others need accommodations first, especially if touch feels threatening. For those children, start with comfort and trust. Let them use tools instead of bare hands. Let them choose between two clothing options. Give warning before messy play. Respect the fact that their body may experience touch more intensely than yours.

With sensory support, the parent’s job is not to become a therapist overnight. Your job is to observe, support, and partner wisely. Occupational therapists can be incredibly helpful when sensory struggles interfere with daily life, safety, learning, or relationships. A good evaluation can give language to what you are seeing and offer practical strategies tailored to your child.

Still, parents hold valuable information. You see your child across the whole day. You know what happens after poor sleep, what foods make mornings harder, what environments overwhelm them, and which activities bring them back to themselves. That knowledge matters.

A simple way to start is to make a short list of your child’s sensory signals. Write down what they seek, what they avoid, and what helps them recover. Maybe they seek crashing, avoid clothing tags, and recover with deep pressure. Maybe they seek spinning, avoid loud rooms, and recover outside. Maybe they avoid swings, dislike hair washing, and calm down with heavy blankets and quiet reading.

Once you see the pattern, you can build a small sensory rhythm into the day. Not a color-coded, laminated, museum-quality routine that makes you feel guilty by Wednesday. Just a rhythm. Movement before seated work. Heavy work before handwriting. Quiet pressure after errands. Clothing choices before the morning battle begins. Outdoor time before everyone starts speaking in tones they will later regret.

The long-term goal is self-awareness. As children grow, we want them to understand their own bodies. We want them to be able to say, “I need to move,” “That texture bothers me,” “I need a break,” or “Heavy work helps me focus.” These are not excuses. They are tools for maturity.

Over time, I have seen children who once crashed through life begin to understand themselves. They learned to ask for pressure instead of tackling a sibling. They learned to jump before schoolwork instead of falling apart during it. They learned that their bodies were not bad, broken, or disobedient. Their bodies needed support, practice, and patient teaching.

That is a very different message for a child to carry.

When Sensory Struggles Are Really Communication

One of the most helpful shifts a parent can make is to see sensory behavior as communication. Not perfect communication. Not polite communication. Not the kind of communication that arrives in a tidy envelope with a stamp. But communication all the same.

A child who screams during hair brushing may be communicating tactile pain or fear. A child who chews pencils may be communicating a need for oral input. A child who runs laps through the house may be communicating that their vestibular system is hungry for movement. A child who melts down after errands may be communicating that the lights, sounds, smells, transitions, and social demands were simply too much.

At first, this can feel overwhelming. Once you learn about sensory processing, you may start seeing it everywhere. The sock issue is sensory. The chair issue is sensory. The grocery store issue is sensory. The child licking the shopping cart handle is probably sensory, although that one may also require prayer, disinfectant, and a brief moment alone.

But seeing sensory needs does not mean every behavior becomes acceptable. Communication still needs guidance. If a child crashes into a sibling, we can recognize the need for deep pressure while also saying, “People are not crash pads.” If a child hates a clothing texture, we can offer reasonable choices while still helping them learn what must be tolerated for certain settings. If a child needs movement, we can provide it in a way that does not destroy the living room or the emotional stability of everyone in it.

This balance matters. Some parents swing toward strictness because they fear chaos. Others swing toward accommodation because they fear causing distress. Most of us bounce between the two depending on sleep, hormones, and whether someone spilled milk into a library book. But children need both compassion and boundaries. They need us to understand the struggle and teach the next right step.

A helpful phrase is, “I believe you, and we are going to help your body learn.” This tells the child they are not being accused of faking. It also tells them they are not stuck. Their body can grow. Their brain can learn. Skills can develop slowly and steadily.

For homeschooling parents, this mindset can change the whole atmosphere of the day. Instead of forcing a child to sit still for long lessons because that is what school is “supposed” to look like, you can ask what kind of learning environment actually helps your child learn. Maybe spelling happens while bouncing. Maybe math facts happen during a walk. Maybe read-aloud time happens with a child wrapped in a blanket burrito on the floor. It still counts. The education police have not arrived at my house yet, and I have given them plenty of opportunities.

This is one of the quiet gifts of homeschooling a child with sensory needs. You can preserve the goal while changing the path. The goal may be reading, writing, math, conversation, character, independence, or faithfulness. The path may include movement, texture breaks, deep pressure, outdoor lessons, shorter assignments, or a different chair.

Inside the hard days, it can be easy to focus only on what is not working. You may see the child who cannot sit still, cannot tolerate socks, cannot stop spinning, cannot write neatly, cannot handle the grocery store, cannot keep their hands to themselves. But that is not the whole child. That is a child whose nervous system is asking for help while they are also growing, learning, loving, creating, and becoming.

When we support the tactile, proprioceptive, and vestibular systems, we are not just making the day easier. We are helping a child feel safer inside their own body. We are helping them build trust with us and with themselves. We are teaching them that their struggles can be understood, not just punished.

And for many children, that understanding becomes a turning point. They stop seeing themselves as the bad kid, the clumsy kid, the difficult kid, or the kid who is always too much. They begin to see themselves as a person with a body that has needs, a brain that can learn, and a parent who is willing to help them figure it out.

That is not a small thing. That is the kind of growth that changes a home slowly, quietly, and deeply.

Simple Next Steps for Parents

Give your child language without making it complicated. You might say, “Your body looks like it needs heavy work,” or “That texture is really bothering you,” or “Let’s help your body know where it is.” These words help children connect their feelings and actions to body signals.

Keep boundaries kind and firm

Sensory needs explain behavior, but they do not erase the need for teaching. A child may need to crash, but not into people. A child may need to chew, but not on books. A child may hate socks, but may still need to choose an option before leaving the house. The goal is not to remove every challenge. The goal is to support the child while teaching what comes next.

Getting help does not mean you have failed. It means you are gathering better tools.

You do not have to understand every neurological detail to begin helping your child. You can start with observation, compassion, and one practical change. That may not sound dramatic, but many good things in parenting begin with one small, faithful adjustment.
