Sometimes the progress was fast enough to make us all blink. More often, it was slow, steady, and slightly inconvenient, which seems to be the preferred pace of most worthwhile things.
In our own home and in conversations with many parents over the years, I have seen practical changes when families began supporting the body beneath the behavior. A child who could not tolerate copywork began writing a few sentences without tears. Many children with retained primitive reflexes benefit from simple, consistent movement. This does not have to be complicated. Crawling games, balance work, animal walks, cross-body movements, rocking, rolling, and rhythmic activities can all support body awareness and coordination.
The key is consistency. A few minutes each day will usually help more than a heroic two-hour session that leaves everyone sweaty, cranky, and questioning their life choices. Movement should feel doable inside your actual home, with your actual children, on an actual Tuesday when someone spills applesauce on the floor.
You are not trying to recreate a clinic. You are building a rhythm.
Make schoolwork fit the child’s current capacity
If your child is struggling with primitive reflexes in children, academic work may need to be adjusted while the foundation grows. That does not mean lowering the long-term goal. It means choosing the next right step.
For handwriting, you might reduce the number of written problems while still expecting careful work. For reading, you might use shorter sessions with movement breaks. Parents can learn a lot by watching their children, but sometimes you need a trained professional. An occupational therapist, developmental optometrist, physical therapist, or other qualified provider may be able to help you understand what is going on beneath the surface.
This is especially important if your child has significant motor delays, vision concerns, feeding issues, severe sensory struggles, trauma history, or daily life skills that are not developing as expected. Asking for help is not failure. It is wisdom.
Homeschooling does not mean doing everything alone. It means you have the freedom to build the right team for your child.
Keep hope practical
Hope is not pretending everything is fine. Hope is looking at the hard thing honestly and still believing growth is possible.
Some days, progress will look like a finished lesson. Other days, it will look like stopping before everyone falls apart. Sometimes it will look like a child doing one cross-body activity without complaining. Sometimes it will look like you taking a breath before answering instead of launching into the speech you have given so many times that even the family dog could recite it.
These things count.
